Tax Season: A break for the poor and a way to pay for dental treatment.

Many people fret tax season since it usually means writing a fat check to the IRS. However, this is one break that poorer people get. The lowest income brackets qualify for refundable credits that could mean a sizable refund in the early part of the year. While some write a check for thousands, others receive refunds for thousands.

Could this pay for your dentistry? Yes. Sure you have other needs......the money is fairly spent before you get it. But think. When else might you have the lump sum you need to rid of the nightmare of dental disease.

Did you know?

You can receive your tax refund very quickly (in less than 3 weeks) without paying outrageous fees? The IRS offers free electronic filing with forms online. Some online tax services, like Turbotax, provide services for free for certain income brackets.

Have you been paid for services that are "under the table" (a phrase I hate----it means 'it seems like I am doing you a favor, but I am cheating you out of up to 7.65% of your income')? Doing contract work in which you are paid a specific dollar amount for working is taxable. When you file (using self-employment forms--Sch SE and Sch C), you will pay the full amount of your social security and medicare taxes (known as FICA). However, if you are in lower income brackets, you will offset this with credits. Not only do you likely receive a refund, you get your future benefits paid.

Tax credits aren't just for people with kids....poor people without children can receive Earned Income Credit and there are refundable credits for students.

Taxes get a bad rap. It is important that members of society pay in to support this country.....it is expensive to be America. For poorer Americans, it means a refund because they tried.

Get busy and file those taxes. And if you dental care, now is the time. MPACT helps people get the dental care they need. If you need low cost or reduced fee dentistry to help you stretch your tax refund, use the contact page and we will assign you a dental health mentor to put you in the right direction. If you have questions about filing your taxes and receiving your refund, ask them here for others to see.

Very affordable dentistry in SC

Since I never want my motives to be questioned as it pertains to my desire to help people, I don't usually refer to dentists or offices unless they specifically work with MPACT to meet those needs.

However, after pondering the point, I want those of you in SC (Florence) to know you have some very affordable dentistry nearby. It should be noted that this is a genuine recommendation and I am not being compensated by this office in any way. The Sexton Dental Clinic offers substantially lower fees than are customary.

Here is a link to the price list. To give you an idea of a few things that had me smiling:

  • Complete upper and lower denture (with extractions) $180
  • Exams $20
  • Simple extraction is $39/tooth ot $18/tooth with denture purchase.
  • One day crowns (caps) $500 (usually $1000)

I venture to say that those in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina would find a trip to Florence, SC to be well worth it.

Remember, if you are having trouble getting your dental needs met, there are volunteers at  MPACT that will coach you along the way and advocate for you when necessarily.

SC Medical University offers emergency dental clinic

The Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston) offers an emergency clinic. Generally, fees at dental schools are usually 1/3 to 1/5 the usual and customary fees in the area. You can find more information here and below. In addition, other treatments are available at the school for much lower cost. Learn how to become a patient.

FROM MUSC WEBSITE:

Emergency Care

The College of Dental Medicine has an emergency “walk in” clinic for both assigned and non assigned patients. Patients are seen in the Oral Medicine Clinic (First Floor, Room 119) Monday through Friday at 8:45 AM or 12:45 PM with the exception of Tuesday mornings. The phone number to the Emergency Dental Clinic is (843) 792-2101, option 1. College of Dental Medicine patients that need to be seen after hours for emergencies can call (843) 792-2123 and ask for the dental resident on call.

If you are experiencing severe pain, swelling, or any life threatening situations, please call 911 or present to the nearest Medical Emergency Room. Rendering of emergency care in no way obligates the College of Dental Medicine to assume responsibility for further treatment. If additional care is indicated following emergency treatment, patients must follow the usual screening procedures to qualify for comprehensive care.

Jan 20 - 21 New Bern Garber Ministry Center 4201 Country Club Road New Bern, NC 28562

March 16 - 17  New London Highland Baptist Church 106 Highland Dr New London NC 28127

You can go to their site to see the full schedule, updates, new events and FAQs about events.

laughIf you attend one of these events, provide some heart-felt sentiment to all of the volunteers. This is a tough way to provide dental services and is very demanding on providers. If they feel appreciated, they will want to do it again.

in response to Mommysaysouch...   Where are you located? How far can you travel? Did the office tell you why they needed you to come in for two more appointments? Did you have an x-ray of that particular tooth or all of your teeth? Do you remember anything mentioned like periodontal disease?

TIP: You can always ask an office for a consultation so you can have a chance to get to know the dentist and find one in which you feel comfortable.

Don't kick the guy when he's down

in response to Hope71...   Your message made me smile. If we were to devote some time to putting ourselves in another's place, we would have a kinder, much more loving society. Besides, we all have short-comings that we would rather others didn't notice.

The truth about Dr Greer: The Rest of the Story

in response to Nick Name...   I really appreciate you taking the time to say these things. It is unfortunate that this technological age will have the draw back of people being attacked in cyberspace. It really does more harm than good. Dr. Greer is one of the better dentists I have worked for and I know her work. What a shame that some would cloud the waters, and good name, of a person most would want to see. I made my post because I want people to see an unbiased opinion....one from a person with no motives other than letting the truth be told.

Raleigh NC FREE Dental Clinic Event August 12 & 13 2011

Raleigh, NC Free Dental Clinic Event RBC Center Raleigh August 12 & 13 2011

The NC Dental Society, through the Missions of Mercy program will host a FREE dental clinic event at The RBC Center 1400 Edwards Mill Rd Raleigh NC 27607. A few tips:

Arrive early. Some people arrive the night before the event. There are many, many people in need. The first day is best. If you are turned away on the last day then that is your last option. If you are turned away the first day, you can come back.

Bring something to drink and eat, it's going to be a long day. Food in your teeth is the least of anyone's worries and the last thing you need is to get grumpy or have your sugar low in this situation.

Develop relationships with those around you. I have seen some of the most beautiful things happen in those long lines. Beside don't we all need to encourage and be encouraged?

Please give the people that help you heart-felt thanks. They are giving themselves for you. Sure some may have other motives, but for the most part it is doing work for free in the toughest situations followed by painful recovery. It is much easier to get volunteers when they spread the news about what a good experience it was.

Take your medicine. If you usually take medicine, don't skip today unless your doctor tells you so. For example, if you skip your blood pressure medicine and it is too high, you can't be treated.

Ask questions and get further direction. The greatest thing I've done about my oral health is learn what makes me healthy. Ask your professional for advice. There is no way to serve all needs in these events, so you'll need follow-up care.

save a life.

 in response to mom451...

Hi Brenda, I am sorry you are going through all of that. The reason I work to help those in need is because I understand, first hand.

People will be reluctant to send anyone cash. Don't let that bother or discourage you. I work completely for free and my family makes every sacrifice to make that happen, so I can not send money either.

I was surprised to see what your oral surgeon is charging. While I understand this is out of reach, this is an exceptional price. The usual rate would be more in the neighborhood of $2000-$2500 plus about $900 for anesthesia. I am going to research a couple of things. I'll let you know what I find out. How old is your son and is he disabled? ~Cassie

The Truth about Teeth Whitening

I want to clear up a few things about teeth whitening.

  1. Using baking soda to whiten your teeth will make them lighter if you have staining habits (wine, coffee, tea, smoking). HOWEVER, with that stain some enamel is removed. HERE's THE THING: The part under the enamel (dentin) is darker and will appear more as enamel is removed. BOTTOM LINE Enamel doesn't grow back and baking soda is harsh.
  2. There are many whitening scams on the internet. Some provide products you can find in toothpaste, some that don't whiten at all and some companies just take your money. Whatever the case---If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  3. You get what you pay for. Go here to learn more about different whitening methods and decide what is best for you.
